In 2015, Sandra Bland, a politically active 28-year-old black woman from Chicago was arrested for a traffic violation in a small Texas town. Three days later, Sandra was found hanging from a noose in her jail cell. Though ruled a suicide, her death sparked allegations of racially-motivated police murder and Sandra became a poster child for activists nationwide, leaving millions to question, “What really happened to Sandra Bland?”

Ten days after Sandra's death, filmmakers, Kate Davis and David Heilbroner began working closely with the family's legal team, tracking the two-year battle between Sandra's aggrieved family and Texas authorities. With disturbing, never-before-told details about the case, the film is punctuated by Sandra’s own passionate and moving commentary.

Approximately 30 “Sandy Speaks” video blogs, which Sandra created herself, allowed the filmmakers to get to know Sandra Bland in a deeply personal way. Via these videos, Sandy herself emerges as a central voice in Say Her Name — an empowered, enlightened woman of color whose sharp, humorous, charismatic remarks address subjects from educating kids about black history to police brutality to the importance of natural hair.

Say Her Name takes viewers deep inside a story that galvanized activists across the country.

Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Documentary Part I Review

First let me say part of me didn't want to watch because I didn't want to dig up those horrible emotions that I felt at the time, however I thought it was important for me to watch. Overall if his own parents can get through it, then so can I. Now if you haven't watched it yet then this blog tells all about part I so you might want to go watch and close this out or just go ahead and read about what I have to say.

OK where do I start? This Documentary starts off by highlighting the case from the very beginning. It starts off with a little about who Trayvon Martin was and talked about his life and it went towards the day he was murdered with 911 calls, interviews, and who ~~George Zimmerman~~ really was, etc. It was basically a recap of everything that happened, but with additional things that we didn't see so this is why I hope everyone tune in as there is alot more to come. It's no secret that almost all viewers including myself had shed some tears. It's heartbreaking, and to know his killer not only continues to stay in trouble with the law after acting like a little b*tch to save himself from prison, but he's still walking free and even mocked Trayvon Martin death a few times. He showed his true self, an animal.

I share my thoughts as the show is on in case anyone want to discuss anything. So my thoughts so far on the Trayvon Martin Documentary is that it's really good and very well put together in my opinion, and it's everything I hoped it to be. Yes it brings back anger and memories, however his story deserves to be told since it was discarded in court.

Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Documentary Series Airs Tonight on Paramount 10/9 c

There are few who will watch “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” who will come to the series completely unfamiliar with the individual at its center. From his 2012 shooting death to the emerging generation of activists and engaged citizens that arose from the 2013 verdict in George Zimmerman’s resultant murder trial, the name Trayvon Martin carries with it associations in different corners of the country. If Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason‘s six-part documentary series shows one thing definitively, it’s that Martin’s senseless killing has come to symbolize so much more about how America sees itself today and the elements of American life that remain unchanged after centuries of turmoil.

One clear goal of “Rest in Power” is to reframe the story as that of individual human beings and not as merely pawns in an ideological or societal struggle. The breadth of interview subjects helps to ensure that Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman are not merely presented as abstract figures. Martin is shown as a student, an aspiring pilot, someone who recognized which of his own decisions he was unhappy with. Zimmerman is described as someone caught in a crisis of identity who chose to embrace an angry worldview, even when presented with plenty of alternatives. Family members, journalists, legal experts, and activists alike offer their own analyses of how Martin’s story dovetails with many others’ throughout American history.

Like many exemplary pieces of recent stories about criminal miscarriages of justice, “Rest in Power” is not a forensic analysis. Rather than being concerned with seizing a definitive answer to the events of February 26, 2012, Furst and Nason take a wider view of the prevailing cultural attitudes and prejudices that may have contributed to Martin’s death, Zimmerman’s eventual acquittal or both. (If anything, there’s a subtle condemnation of the national news media’s obsession with forcing Martin‘s parents to confront a very crime scene in which their son was murdered.) Even while considering Martin, Zimmerman, and the various individuals involved in the trial procedure as living, complex human beings, “Rest in Power” makes Stark observations about how the investigation and trial became a prime example of narrative manipulation and double standards.

Though ruled a suicide, her death sparked allegations of racially-motivated police murder and made Bland’s case a rallying point for activists across the country.

Featuring Bland’s passionate video blogs, the timely documentary follows her family and their legal team as they try to make sense of what happened, presenting a compelling look at her life as well as her death. Directed and produced by Kate Davis; produced by David Heilbroner.

Her tragic death was ruled a suicide, but questions remain from those who challenge the official story of how she died.

Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, To Be Released July 30th

Paramount Network has released the first full-length trailer for its upcoming six-part documentary, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, executive produced by Trayvon Martin's parents and Jay-Z, among others. The series is now scheduled to hit television on July 30.

The doc reportedly adapts two books written about Martin's fatal shooting in 2012 by George Zimmerman, who claimed he killed the teenager — who was carrying Skittles and iced tea from a nearby convenience store to his father's fiancée's house — out of self-defense. Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin is a memoir by Martin's parents, while attorney Lisa Bloom's Suspicion Nation details Zimmerman's trial and eventual acquittal.

The trailer features interviews with Martin's family and chilling audio of the killing's aftermath, as well as footage of the protest movement that swept the nation in the wake of Martin's death. The documentary looks to take a wide view of Trayvon's story, sparing time for his political impact while maintaining focus on his life.

The documentary debuted in April at Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It's the second major Hov-produced series investigating the criminal justice system in as many years, following the pre-trial detention-focused TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, which debuted last year at Sundance.

Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story To Premier At 2018 Tribeca Film Festival

Jay-Z’s docu-series about the tragedy and injustice surrounding Trayvon Martin’s death will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The six-part production, titled Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, will offer a “definitive look at one of the most-talked-about, controversial events of the last decade.”

Among the series premiering at this year’s festival is JAY-Z’s Trayvon Martin docu-series Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, which offers a “definitive look at one of the most talked-about, controversial events of the last decade.” Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will speak to the audience after a screening of the Paramount Network production.

Jay-Z executive-produced the project alongside Travon’s parents and Chachi Senior, Michael Gasparro, Jenner Furst, Julia Willoughby Nason and Nick Sandow.

“We want to make sure that we stand and support and we never forget that Trayvon serves as a beacon of light to the people out here, so you guys never have to go through the pain and hurt that these guys went through,” Jay-Z said during the 2018 Peace Walk & Peace Talk rally, Complex notes. “His name will sit alongside some of the greats [who] lost their life to push our culture forward—the Martin Luther Kings, the Gandhis; that’s the intention that we set, that his name serves as a beacon of light and hope, and pushes us into a better direction.”

The screening will take place April 20 at New York City’s BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 199 Chambers St.

Trayvon Martin Docu-Series

Jay Z and the Weinstein Company got together and planned a docu-series on the killing of Trayvon Martin. It will air on the Paramount Network in 2018.

This is an important American story,” Carter said. “We’re honored that Trayvon’s family has entrusted us to share the truth with the world. Thank you, again, to Paramount Network/Spike TV for being brave enough to partner with us and tell these complex narratives. It’s through these conversations that we can begin to heal.

It's a six part series called "Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story." I'll be sure to let everyone know the official date the docu-series will air, so stay tuned.
