I was finishing up some work on the computer when I suddenly came across an article talking about Richard Spencer being allowed to speak at the University of Florida on Thursday. This is a man who stated precisely, that his vision is to make an America where there are no Blacks, Jews or other people who are not of white European descent, which will never happen. There are many races from all backgrounds who will not tolerate hate. However, the response to him being allowed to speak raises many eyebrows including my own.
Colin Kaepernick have not been able to get a job since him "Taking a Knee" during the National Anthem to protest silently against police brutality and so on. It's his right. However many people were outraged including Donald Trump who started calling for players to be fired for expressing their Freedom of Speech. With Richard Spencer, not only was a State of Emergency just declared, but it's going to cost thousands to protect him and there are people who see nothing wrong with it. Some are saying it's his right and we should respect it. But with Colin Kaepernick although it's his right as well, he's being disrespectful. Do you all see where I am getting at? This is definitely not how America should be. Richard Spencer visit is more than just that, it's a recruitment for those who silently hold the same thoughts and opinions as him. It's sad all around and really goes against America values when we're already struggling to have peace.
My message to any student that feel discouraged and just sadden by this is to be strong. We cannot fight hate with hate, but we can find it with love and coming together as a community once and for all. When voting time comes, vote. Let your voice be heard. If you want to protest, do it peacefully. You're entitled to protest. Getting angry will not solve anything. Knowledge however solves everything.
What are your thoughts on this?
