Sybrina Fulton, mother of slain 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has been
recognized by her social activism fueled by the unjust killing of her
son. Benedict College awarded Fulton with a honorary doctorate at their winter commencement over the weekend.
“The mother of Trayvon Martin dedicates her life to transforming a
family tragedy into social change,” the historically black college
tweeted about Fulton’s work.
Fulton, who was the commencement speaker, was given a Doctor of
Humane Letters as well as the ”Key To the City” from South Carolina
mayor Steven Keith Benjamin.
These accolades were well deserved, as Fulton has devoted her life to
not only empowering and bringing women together but also to stopping
gun violence. Back in 2014, she started The Circle of Mothers, an annual
retreat for women who have lost a child to gun violence. Through the Trayvon Martin Foundation,
which she started with Trayvon’s father Tracy Martin, her goal is to
raise awareness about gun violence. The foundation also has a youth program
that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and
has partnered with Miami Dade College to give scholarships to youth to
attend STEM summer camp.
Even though he is not here, Martin has also received a honorary
degree of his own. In 2017, Martin was given a posthumous bachelor of
science degree in aeronautical science, with a concentration in flight
education, from Florida Memorial University. Martin has dreamt of
becoming a pilot before he was killed by George Zimmerman in 2012.
Fulton graduated from Florida Memorial University with an English
degree.
