The former Stamps Mayor David Bright had recently resigned and Mayor
Brenda Davis, the town's first African American mayor, had just been
appointed to fill his term when the monuments were taken. One of the monuments was a framed photo of stamps native and famous poet Maya Angelou. The other monument was a copper bust with black confederate soldiers. Both been placed in the city park around 2014.
Not only will security be increased, Mayor Davis didn't say whether she believed the thefts were racially motivated, but did say the timing was devastating.
The confederate soldier bust is said to be worth more than $2,000 according to the city officials. It's expected to be replaced before the end of the year.
I find it very disheartening that this happened and I have no problem admitting that I personally feel that this was racially motivated, especially with everything going on in the world today. If you have any information please contact your local law enforcement agency.
