Neighborhood Watch and Race

If you don't know about Trayvon Martin, then you must've been living under a rock. Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old African American Florida teen who was walking home from the store when he was stalked and murdered by George Zimmerman who was a neighborhood watchman that deemed Trayvon Martin "suspicious" and proceeded to follow him after a 911 dispatcher told him not to. You can read more about it by going here;

Moving on to the year of 2017, many of you have moved on from the shocking verdict of George Zimmerman not being found guilty as he should have. I decided today to do some research regarding neighborhood watch in general and this program is alive and well still. The mentality to watch African American men/boys also still exist, and if anything heightened, which became a direct threat to African American men/boys who live in upscale neighborhoods.

Here's an article just to give everyone an idea of what I am talking about;

It shouldn't even have to be this way but it is. If you move into an upscale neighborhood I suggest installing cameras around your home, introducing yourself to your neighbors, and taking a walk around your neighborhood to get a feel of it. If you have children, encourage them to be active in the neighborhood. I'm not talking about forcing acceptance, I am simply suggesting not being afraid to enjoy the neighborhood you live in, rather than feeling uncomfortable.

With this program being allowed to take place I do believe there should be some changes legally to not only prevent another Trayvon Martin situation, but to also put an end to racial profiling. Following should definitely be prohibited and neighborhood watchmen should be required to identify themselves immediately.
