I hope this is a lesson to all racist that you have a right to Freedom of Speech, but that does not include Freedom from Consequences as well. What happened to DeAndre Harris was not only disgusting but down right wrong, especially after a Police Officer was seen on video apparently not intervening during the beating.
Two men convicted in the violent beating of DeAndre Shakur Harris have received their prison sentences from a judge in Charlottesville Circuit Court.
In May, juries in separate trials found Jacob Scott Goodwin and Alex Michael Ramos both guilty of malicious wounding.
Goodwin had claimed he was defending himself against Harris in the
Market Street Parking Garage on August 12, 2017. Video footage from last
year's Unite the Right rally showed the Arkansas man dressed in militia-style gear.
Ramos'
counsel had admitted he took a "cheap shot" at Harris during the same
incident, and asked jurors to consider a lesser charge against the
Georgia man.
Thursday, August 23, a judge sentenced Goodwin to a
total of ten years, but two were suspended. He must also have 20 years
of good behavior and serve probation.
The same judge later handed down a prison term of six years to Ramos, as well as three years of post-release supervision.
During sentencing Thursday, Goodwin said, "I am truly and genuinely sorry for what happened to Mr. Harris."
Ramos told the judge during his sentencing, “I’m really sorry for everything I’ve done.”
Daniel Patrick Borden was also found guilty for his parts in the attack, and is expected to be sentenced on October 1.
Tyler Watkins Davis
is scheduled for an arraignment on October 4. He was the fourth person
charged by authorities, and faces one count of malicious wounding.
