A Selfless Man, John Marsden Of Houston, TX.

I first learned about John Marsden when the Maleah Davis story first broke. Since then I have been a follower and can honestly say I am truly touched by everything he continues to do for his community. From feeding the homeless to fighting for justice for Homicide Victims, and more. I decided to personally take a moment to write this blog to bring attention to John and the people who walk side by side with him. Each and everyone of them deserve recognition for all that they do.

As the holidays roll around John will be putting together another event to give back. If you would like to help out he does have a CASHAPP: $JohnA75 where you can donate if you choose to. Below are some pictures of his latest event that involved feeding the Homeless. Which was a complete success. Nobody went to sleep hungry yesterday who was able to attend.

We are living in a time when coming together is very important, as well as giving back. If you have time make a few care bags or buy someone lunch. I learned a lot from John and feel so inspired that I plan to do my own give back during Christmas time. It's up to us to better our community and built each other up.

Black King Climbs 19-Story Building in Philadelphia To Rescue Mom From Fire

A man seen scaling a West Philadelphia apartment building during a fire spoke exclusively to Action News describing how he would stop at nothing to reach his mother trapped on the 15th floor.

Thirty-five-year-old Jermaine has experience scaling walls. He was a roofer, construction worker, and an all-around adventurous child.

"As kids we used to jump roofs," he said. "Glad I had the practice."

That practice came in handy Thursday night when the 19-story Westpark Apartments high-rise at 4445 Holden Street started filling with smoke.

Jermaine got a call from his sister that their mother, 65-year-old Sheila, who is bed-ridden, couldn't get out of her 15th floor apartment.

He rushed over to the scene. Jermaine first attempted the front door, but it was blocked by police.

"They said the elevators are not working. I said, 'No problem. I'll take the steps. I just want to make sure my mother- my mother is sick, she's bed-ridden. So I need to get up there," Jermaine said. "They were like 'we can't let you in.' I took it upon myself because that's my mother. There's no limits. That's my mother."

Earlier that day, Jermaine fell and cracked his hip on a set of stairs. His crutches sat next to him on the couch as he was being interviewed by Action News.

Despite his injuries, adrenaline took over. Jermaine started to scale the fenced-in balconies of the building, with wire cutters in hand. He was familiar with the layout of the complex because he had lived there in the past.

"When I grabbed a gate, at the top of the gate, there was a ledge. Then I could step on top of the ledge and reach up to the other gate, and keep climbing my way up," Jermaine said.

He did anything he could just to get to his mother.

Jermaine's mother made it out safely, as did many residents. Four civilians and three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

Illinois 8th-Grader Raised $1,000 For A Community ‘Free Wash Day’

An Illinois teen is giving the gift of clean laundry to those in need in her community.

Jayera, 14, of Riverdale, saved her allowance and collected donations to raise about $1,000. She used the money to give back to the community by holding a "free wash day" this week at a laundromat near her home.

"We're really proud of her," Jayera's mother, Tanya Williams, told me. "She had mentioned that when she tutored kids, sometimes their uniforms were dirty. She came with the idea on her own."

Jayera is an eighth-grader at Washington Junior High School in Dolton-Riverdale School District 148. She's a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

"She's had straight A's ever since she's been in school," her mother said. "She has perfect attendance."

Jayera, the youngest of seven children, has always thought about other people, her father, Michael Griffin, told me. She volunteered at food pantries and performed other acts of kindness.

"She's been doing community service since she was a little shorty," he said.

One way Jayera gives back is by tutoring younger children at Washington Elementary School. She felt bad that some of the children she tutored wore uniforms that weren't as clean as they could be.

Her parents told her not everyone was fortunate enough to own a washing machine and dryer in their homes. That's when Jayera started saving her $5-a-week allowance for a free wash day.

"I would just save it, I wouldn't spend it," she said.

Members of the School District 148 and Thornton Township boards contributed to the effort, her parents said.

Jayera used word of mouth to spread news of the event throughout her school and the community. On Tuesday, dozens of people stopped by Mama's Coin Laundry at 321 W. 138th St. in Riverdale to clean their clothes. Jayera's school is on spring break this week.

Typically at Mama's the driers are free but the cost of washers can range from $4.50 for smaller loads to $8 for the bigger machines.

People thanked Jayera for her generosity. When you're a senior citizen on a fixed monthly income, every little bit helps make a difference.

"God bless her heart," said Rita Meadows, who lives in a five-story apartment building for senior citizens on the same block as the laundromat.

"This is awesome," Meadows said. "This is the first time I've seen something like this, where somebody thought of the community. She truly is an angel."

Meadows told me she could wash her clothes for $1.25 per load and dry them for 75 cents per load in machines at the senior housing building where she lives.

I can tell Jayera is going to have a very bright future and I wish her the very best. It's good to see some good come out of this generation, and more of the young in the Black community becoming entrepreneurs and wanting to help others rather than bully. While this story is a couple of months old and actually took place in April, I personally haven't heard about it so im sure many others haven't. Way to go, Jayera.

Stephen Curry Helped Nia Wilson's Family By Raising $21,000

Golden State Warriors Star Stephen Curry has helped raise $21,025 for the family of Nia Wilson through his SC30 Showcase Game on Tuesday.

Curry streamed the event on his official Facebook page and encouraged fans to donate over the course of the night.

A man is accused of stabbing Wilson to death at a Bay Area Rapid Transit stop in Oakland, California, in July. Authorities charged John Cowell with murder and attempted murder after he also allegedly stabbed Wilson's sister, Letifah.

Wilson's father, Ansar El Muhammad, spoke about the importance of Curry's gesture.

"This is what's keeping me and my family so strong," he said, per NBC Bay Area. "All the support from giants like Stephen Curry and abroad, that's what's keeping us strong at the moment."

Wrongfully Jailed At 14 For Murder, Man Cries As He's Exonerated

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Shawn'Dya Simpson shared a brief conversation with Bunn and his mother, Maureen, at the bench after prosecutors agreed to dismiss the charges that he murdered a correction officer.

"Move forward," the judge told Bunn. "Keep me posted."

Simpson tossed Bunn's conviction in November 2016 and ordered a new trial after an evidentiary hearing exposed Scarcella's actions.

Bunn was paroled seven years earlier after spending 17 years behind bars. Defense lawyers claim Bunn and a second man were framed for the killing.

"There were problems with this case that were very obvious," said defense lawyer Glenn Garber, standing with Bunn and co-counsel Rebecca Freeman. "There was no probable cause to make an arrest."

Speaking Tuesday, Simpson noted that Bunn was only 14 when he was arrested and jailed in the Crown Heights murder of Rolando Neischer.

"I am more than emotional about this day," said Simpson as her voice cracked. "You were 14 at the time. This shouldn't have ever happened."

Bunn and Rosean Hargrave, then 16, were placed in a photo array created by Scarcella for Robert Crosson — who survived the shooting to become the sole eyewitness, authorities said.

Simpson, during the hearing, made a point of questioning the legal process that convicted Bunn and Hargrave.

It's really sad to see so many cases like this happening, and most men are not even being compensated for the years of their life that was literally stolen from them.

Feel Good Story; Maryland College Student Saves Woman From Burning House

Aside from all the chaotic articles I post, I ran across a story of a young man who saved an 80-year-old from a burning house when she couldn't get out herself.

On Wednesday, Williams saw Gail Johnson’s home engulfed in flames; but with the commotion and noise of the fire trucks, Williams was the one who heard Johnson’s cry for help.

“I yelled to the fire department, ‘Somebody’s in the house,’” Williams told WJZ. “But it was loud, like the sirens, and there was a lot of cars driving by.”

“So at that time, that’s when I jumped over the fence and went in and opened the door for her. She was struggling to get the door open,” Williams said.

Johnson’s family believes it was an act of God that Williams happened to be in the right place at the right time, and he’s being called a hero.

But Williams said he’s no hero, he was just following the values instilled in him by his mom.

“I keep telling everybody, I don’t think I’m a hero or anything,” he said. “It’s just, I did something I wish anybody else would have done.”

Johnston’s daughter says her mom is currently fighting cancer, struggles with COPD, and uses oxygen.

We're so glad both are ok and made it out safe. We hope for the best for Gail Johnston and her fight with cancer and COPD. I could only imagine what was running through her head, given the fact she's already fighting for her life. Job well done William's.
