May 19, 2019 0
Trayvon Martin's Mother, Sybrina Fulton is Running For Miami-Dade County Commission.

Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, has announced that she is running for a seat on the Miami-Dade County Commission.

Fulton was thrust into the national spotlight after the shooting of her son in 2012. Since then she has spent her life advocating for an end to gun violence and promoting social justice.

“Since 2012, I have advocated tirelessly to empower our communities and make them safer,” she said in a statement Saturday. “But the work is not done. I am proud to announce that I will run to represent District 1 on the county commission.”

“Our county must continue moving forward so our families are safe from violence, can afford to live in Miami-Dade, and have access to good paying jobs,” she said in her statement. “I am ready to take on these issues and many others in county government.”

If you live in Miami-Dade County it wouldn't hurt to read up on Sybrina Fulton and show her some support. She's an amazing woman with amazing strength and knowledge and I have to give her credit for all she have done. She took a tragedy and using it to make changes and trying to help others. She definitely deserves this chance.

Both Stacey Abrams & Andrew Gillum Concedes In Governor Race.

November 18, 2018 0
Both Stacey Abrams & Andrew Gillum Concedes In Governor Race.

Former Democratic Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said Sunday that while her opponent, Republican Brian Kemp, was the legal victor of the state governor's race, she would not call him the legitimate winner.

Abrams told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" that she thought there was deliberate interference in the election, saying "it began eight years ago with the systematic disenfranchisement of more than a million voters. It continued with the underfunding and disinvestment in polling places, in training and in the management of the county delivery of services. And I think it had its pinnacle in this race."

"So yes, there was a deliberate and intentional disinvestment and, I think, destruction of the administration of elections in the state of Georgia," Abrams added.

The Georgia race has stoked a fierce new front in the national battle over voting rights and access to the polls. Kemp, who as Georgia's recently resigned secretary of state promoted and enforced some of the nation's most restrictive voting laws, was accused repeatedly before and during the campaign of seeking to suppress the minority vote.

Abrams on Friday ended her bid to become the first African American woman elected to lead a state. The announcement followed more than a week of post-election legal maneuvering from her campaign and allies, who sought to find enough votes to reduce Kemp's lead and force a December 4 runoff. In a fiery speech, Abrams announced plans for a "major federal lawsuit against the state of Georgia for the gross mismanagement of this election and to protect future elections from unconstitutional actions."

It's very unfortunate that the race ended this way especially how close it was. The same with Andrew Gillum, the race was extremely close but in the end he did not win and ended up conceding to Ron DeSantis in Florida. Here's what he had to say:

“We promised to fight until every vote was counted, and obviously we are now closing out the hand recount phase,” Mr. Gillum said in an announcement broadcast over Facebook Live on Saturday, standing next to his wife. “R. Jai and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida. This has been the journey of our lives.”

Andrew Gillum, the Democratic nominee and mayor of Tallahassee, conceded the Florida governor’s race on Saturday to Ron DeSantis, a former Republican congressman closely allied to President Trump, saying he was satisfied with a recount that had him trailing by about 34,000 votes.

Mr. DeSantis declared victory on election night this month, and Mr. Gillum, 39, announced he was conceding the race at the time. But he re-entered the race a week ago, under pressure from staff members and allies in organized labor, after the Florida secretary of state’s office declared an automatic recount.

Lucy McBath, Mother of Jordan Davis Declares Victory In GA House Race!

Lucy McBath, Mother of Jordan Davis Declares Victory In GA House Race!

Georgia Democrat Lucy McBath has declared victory in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District race, despite the fact that the race has not officially been called at this time.

McBath, a gun control advocate and former flight attendant, has spent much of her campaign sharing her personal story to make the case for why she should be in Congress.

McBath released the following statement.

McBath’s election watch party was about two miles from Handel’s, at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North.

“It appears clear that the election in the 6th Congressional district will not be decided this evening,” she said as Tuesday night became Wednesday morning. “Now we look forward over the next few days to having the voice of the remaining voters to be heard. It is imperative that every vote be counted. Until that time, we cannot call this race one way or the other.”

She joined the dozens of supporters left in the audience in a deafening chant of “Flip the 6th” before adding, “I grew up with my parents working tirelessly in the Civil Rights movement to make sure that everyone had the ability to vote. And so we will make sure that everyone that has cast a vote has the ability to be heard. So hang in there, we have a couple more days to go, but in the end we win.”

The 6th District matchup drew far less national attention than the last time the district was in play, when Handel, Georgia’s former Secretary of State and a former Fulton County Commission chair, fended off a star-studded challenge from political newcomer Jon Ossoff.

Ossoff showed up at McBath’s watch party and expressed confidence early on that she would manage to unseat his former opponent. He pointed to President Donald Trump, who held campaign rallies stumping for Republican candidates including Georgia’s Brian Kemp, as a motivating factor in voter turnout.

Congratulations to McBath, I hope she take this victory and run with it. She fought a hard fight and won. I truly wish her the best.

Andrew Gillum Concedes After Hard Fought Governors Race In Florida

November 06, 2018 0
Andrew Gillum Concedes After Hard Fought Governors Race In Florida

Democrat Andrew Gillum has conceded the race for Florida governor to Republican Ron DeSantis, marking a major win for the GOP in their bid to hold on to the top job in the nation's largest swing state.

"Earlier this evening, I called Mr. Ron DeSantis and congratulated him on what we expect will be him as the next governor of the great state of Florida," Gillum told supporters Tuesday night.

"I want you to know that in spite of our congratulating him on his victory this evening, nothing we believe in has be compromised."

DeSantis' apparent victory is a key accomplishment for Republicans, who feared that an energetic Democratic base and dissatisfaction with President Trump among moderate voters could cost them the governorship in the country's third-most-populous state.

The race between DeSantis and Gillum pitted two candidates from dueling ends of the political spectrum.

DeSantis, a former congressman who raised his national profile through frequent appearances on Fox News, cast himself as an intensely loyal ally of the president, building large parts of his campaign around a vow to cooperate with the Trump administration.

Meanwhile, Gillum, who secured the endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) earlier this year, campaigned on a message of increasing corporate taxes in the state, raising the minimum wage to $15 and expanding Medicaid. If elected, Gillum would have been Florida's first African-American governor.

I believe this is why many of us feel that voting is just a waste of time. The race was very close, so close I personally feel Andrew Gillum should consider a presidential run. I also think now is the time Democrats needs to really get it together and built a stronger platform since something is obviously missing.

Lucy McBath (Jordan Davis Mother) Is Running For Congress In Georgia

Lucy McBath (Jordan Davis Mother) Is Running For Congress In Georgia

In 2016, Lucy McBath crisscrossed the country on the campaign trail as one of Hillary Clinton’s “Mothers of the Movement” speaking out against gun violence.

Alongside other grieving mothers, she spoke to voters about how her son, Jordan Davis, had been shot and killed at 17 years old when a white man complained he was playing his music too loudly. Clinton, she said, would be the only candidate to stand up to the gun lobby and to help prevent more tragedies.

This year, she’s on the campaign trail again, sending the same message for herself.

McBath is running for Congress in Georgia’s sixth district, the seat that Democrat Jon Ossoff narrowly lost in the closely-watched special election last year that turned out to be the most expensive House race ever. While Ossoff failed to flip the seat, McBath said she believes she’ll be successful in November by sharing her experiences with gun violence.

McBath is challenging Karen Handel, a Republican member of Congress who was endorsed by the NRA and who accepted thousands of dollars from the gun lobby during her 2017 campaign.

McBath, an African American woman and a former Delta flight attendant, talks about how she never thought she would go into politics. When her son was killed in 2012, however, her life took a turn, and she began working with gun safety organizations like Moms Demand Action. After the Parkland shooting, she decided running for office was the next step. She said that making that decision this year, when there’s an unprecedented number of women running for office, felt right.

I wish I would've known sooner that she was running, I admire her strength and the fact she's turning such a tragedy in her life into something positive is amazing. If you haven't clicked my learn more about her link, please do.  After reading the issues she's focusing on I feel like she lack in some areas in my personal opinion.  I think we have enough people focusing on immigration, women's rights, LGBT rights and so on. It would be nice to have a candidate that focuses more on the Black community a little more and our rights that are being violated just about every day. This is just my opinion.

Andrew Gillum Targeted By Racist Robocall

Andrew Gillum Targeted By Racist Robocall

A white supremacist website in Idaho is sending out an extremely racist robocall against Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum.

Voters in Florida received the robocall on Tuesday, and HuffPost obtained audio of the recording. Speaking in an exaggerated minstrel dialect, an actor pretends to be Gillum, saying: “Well hello there. I is the N---- Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida.”

Minstrel music plays in the background, and a monkey screeches occasionally to refer to Gillum, who is the mayor of Tallahassee.

The ad says Gillum’s health care plan will be quite cheap, because he’ll just give chicken feet to people as medicine. It talks about how Jewish people are going to vote for him, because Jews are “the ones that been putting N--- in charge over the white folk, just like they done after the Civil War.”

HuffPost reader Rusty Gordon noted that the music in the background of the ad appears to be from “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” the controversial ― and popular ― radio and television show that relied on racial stereotypes.

At the end of the robocall, a disclaimer says it was paid for by The Road To Power, a white supremacist website and podcast based in Idaho that sent out a similar call against Gillum in August, when he was running in the Democratic primary. The group has been linked to racist robocalls in Virginia, Oregon, California, Idaho, Iowa and Pennsylvania

This is sickening to say the least. Usually around big elections the white supremacist come out in full force by voter intimidation and doing little stuff like this. Another reason why it's important to vote. I'm glad none of this slowed down Andrew Gillum and he have my full support and I hope he have yours.

Roughly 40 Black Seniors In Georgia Were Told To Get Off A Bus Organized To Take Them To Cast Their Votes.

Roughly 40 Black Seniors In Georgia Were Told To Get Off A Bus Organized To Take Them To Cast Their Votes.

Seniors in rural Georgia were dancing in the street, preparing to board Black Voters Matter‘s bus to cast their ballots Monday, the first day of the state’s early voting period. But the county clerk ordered the senior center to take the 40 or so elderly African Americans off the bus — an act organizers described as “live voter suppression.”

Black Voters Matter is driving across Georgia in their bus, plastered with photos of African Americans and raised fists, conducting voter outreach and engagement. After speaking with seniors at the Leisure Center in Jefferson County about the importance of voting, they invited them to board the bus Monday to go to their polling place.

But once the elderly people were onboard, Black Voters Matter co-founder Cliff Albright announced that they’d have to get off. Leisure Center’s staff said someone had called county officials and complained that the bus should not be taking voters to the polls, he said.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday reported that a Jefferson County clerk had called the senior center, raising concerns about allowing the bus to take residents to vote. The county administrator later told the newspaper that officials considered the bus tour “political activity,” which is barred at county-sponsored events. The senior center is a county-run facility.

LaTosha Brown, Black Voters Matter’s other co-founder, said there was nothing illegal about the group’s activity. The organization is non-partisan and the bus doesn’t endorse any particular candidate. She called it a clear-cut case of “voter intimidation.”

The senior center has its own bus that it can use to bring the elderly voters to the polls in the future, Brown said.

“At the end of the day, every senior that got off that bus, not only are they going to vote, but they’re going to get five to ten people to vote with them,” she said.

Get out and vote. This is why it's important. Stop letting people tell you that your vote don't matter, because it does. If that's the case President Obama would've never won given the amount of hate he received. When you don't vote, you're only casting a vote for the other party. Andrew Gillum Wins Florida Democratic Nomination

August 29, 2018 0
Andrew Gillum Wins Florida Democratic Nomination

In a surprising win, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum earned the Democratic nomination in Florida’s primary race for governor Tuesday night, putting him in a position to become the state’s first black governor if he wins in November, the Washington Post reports.

Gwen Graham, a former member of Congress who was the Democratic frontrunner and led in the polls for most of the race, came in second. Gillum will face the Donald Trump-endorsed GOP nominee Rep. Ron DeSantis in the general election.

Gillum, 39, ran on a progressive platform that includes Medicare for all, paying teachers $50,000 per year, and abolishing ICE. He trailed in the polls for most of the race, but made a significant surge over the last few weeks. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ endorsement two weeks ago and infusion of cash and mobilization support also proved crucial.

“I am overwhelmed,” Gillum told a cheering crowd of supporters at a victory party at Hotel Duval in downtown Tallahassee. “I want you to know that this thing is not about me. This race is about every single one of us. Those of us inside this room. Those outside of this room. Those who voted for me. Those who didn’t vote at all. And those who didn’t vote for me because they are Republicans. But I want to be their governor, too.”

MORE ABOUT ANDREW GILLUM

Andrew Gillum is running for Governor to rebuild Florida into a state that works for all of us. He knows everyone deserves good-paying jobs so they can support their families. He wants to protect and expand Floridians’ access to quality, affordable healthcare, especially people with pre-existing conditions. He knows we need to strengthen our public schools and end the culture of high-stakes testing.

As Governor, he will fight against the special interests that are standing in the way of taking real action on climate change, and he will always ensure Florida is a welcoming and safe place for everyone, no matter where they come from, who they love or how they identify.

Andrew was born in Miami where his mother drove a school bus and his father was a construction worker. He was the first in his family to graduate college and he went on to become the youngest person in history elected to the Tallahassee City Commission, before later becoming Mayor. He has a proud record of 15 years in public service.

As Mayor, Andrew developed a thriving innovation economy, beat the gun lobby in court to protect commonsense reform and stood up to President Trump and Governor Rick Scott to defend immigrants.

I urge everyone to get out and vote. This election is not only a big one but also an important one. Andrew Gillum could be the answer for the Black community.
